Keeping Coconut Coals Lit

Recommended Posts

I picked up an off brand of coconut coal called Krypton the other day and cannot keep them lit. I wrote a review and you can read about how other than this issue they seem like they could be really good coals. They start to go out almost immediately after use and are fully extinguished after 15 minutes, and yes I flipped them alot to try to keep em going.

ANY WAY TO KEEP STUBBORN COCONUT COALS LIT?!?!?!?!

Rather not throw a kilo of coals out.

It's possible that they're not fully lit. I've only used em the once so I haven't really experimented with any variable situations to compare results. I let them light for a good 7,8,9 minutes, next time I'll try to leave em for a bit longer.

If you use a coil burner to light your coals, I've seen that people leave the coals on until they have a little flame around them. They MUST be fully lit if they are fire!!

But the main thing i want to add, is that when I flip my coals and the top is black, if I want to get red again quickly I just put a windcover on. After a little while the coal will be red hot all over. Only downside is that adding a windcover will increase the heat the bowl is getting. Try doing that smile.gif

EDIT: BEAT ME TO IT!!! biggrin.gif Edited by the_cool

Windcover guys!

It's a part of heat management just like ashing and moving coals. Throwing a windcover on for 45 seconds after ashing coconut coals revitailizes them. Put the coals dark side up and Add windcover, BAM! fully lit again.

the smoke is steadily decreasing as they go out.

i used a windcover albeit tilted on the bowl, not freestanding, and they went out faster.

sounds like I'll have to use a windcover properly and bust out the old coffee can height modification.

Lazy ninja will try that and keep em lighting a bit longer.

Any other suggestions?

But why when I have a free coffee can mod? smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Lazy ninja is also cheap ninja. Thanks though Stuie lol.

Sounds like the consensus is more lighting time and proper windcover usage.

Thanks all! Fingers crossed.

Square coals, look just like Johns nats to me.

edit - just read john's post lol, they arent the same, but look closer to his than others I've seen.

They were only 8 bucks a kilo and I mostly shop locally so I thought what the heck why not try em.

johns coals are the easiest to keep lit they relight themselves on a flip where coconaras need a windcover

i was smoking with smokinmoose's coconaras the other night and they re-lit themselves after a flip just fine without a windcover.

Ive never had a problem with any of the brands of coconut coals ive used staying lit. it seems everytime ia sh the coals they turn bright red with anger like im stealing part of them....

i've only used CH QLs and i agree. i ash, and there's a bright red side and a black side. i put the red side on the bowl and less than a minute later, the black side turns red.

You were all right thank you so much!

I'm about 25 minutes into my session tonight and these coals rock harder than any I've used! Barely any ash at all, great heat, staying lit for sure!

All I did was leave them on the stove for a while longer and I'm using my windcover as suggested and HOLY SHIT these things rock so hard.

I'm going to have to edit my review smile.gif

Pics as son as we get our digital cam reader thingy in a couple days smile.gif

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!

I just can't understand why aren't cocobricos/cocochas imported to the US market yet. It's just the best damn coal in the market and really cheap too!

Good thing you found good coconut coals at a more reasonable price though smile.gif
